Christmas Day at Colin and Terrah's

Colin and Terrah were both wearing their footie pj's while cooking breakfast when Kyler and I arrived. Riley, of course was the center of attention all day. She was adorable as ever! She crawled a bit down the hall. Colin has been watching the food channel and learned how to make a prime rib for our dinner. It was absolutely delicious! We had so much fun when we exchanged gifts. I just felt so blessed this Christmas!

Christmas Eve in Kirkland

We had our traditional Christmas Eve fondue dinner. Colin watched football. Kyler and I hung out with Terrah and played with Riley. then Sam and Sharon, riley's other Grandparents, arrived. Dinner was fabulous with a view overlooking the lake. Terrah got red footie pj's for she and Colin for Christmas morning. Sooo cute!

Elizabeth and Gracie

Elizabeth and I did errands today. Just a simple day but it will live in my memory forever. We had so much fun. Her cancer has spread to her brain and she has just undergone full brain radiation. Today, we went and got her that sassy wig! I think she looks cute. It was fun shopping at the consignment shop and having lunch at Wild Ginger. We got Gracie all cleaned and ready for the holidays at Joel and Carrie's house while Elizabeth went to California for the holidays with her sons. Though she is not in pain, it is hard to see Elizabeth with such grace deal with her prognosis. My heart aches for her and her family.

Jazz Alley filled with Music

I have never been to the historic and famous Jazz Alley in all the 30 years I have lived in this area. So, I was delighted when Kathleen invited me to a concert with the pianist, David Lanz! We were joined by Catherine and Pam right at the edge of the stage. Dinner was delicious. We had a marvelous time.

If the shoe fits... you might be Cinderella! Sam and I went to the 5th Avenue Production of the musical Cinderella. Steve gave us his season tickets as a Christmas gift. We had dinner at a cute Italian restaurant in Belltown. We had such a lovely time!

Had dinner tonight with some of my girlfriends in Seattle at the Sixth Ave Grill. Diane called Pam, then Pam called me, then I called Kathleen, then Kathleen called Myrne. It was a chain of calls that brought us all together within a few hours. We were telling stories about facebook and online dating. The guy at the next table almost fell over laughing so hard. I just feels so good to laugh out loud with girlfriends about some of the absurdities in life.. ok.. many dealing with dating and just men in general.....
We celebrated Diane Cleary's birthday and planned Pam's birthday party in January.

Christmas in the Conservatory

The Conservatory in the park in downtown Spokane is filled with colored lights during the Christmas season. The greenhouse filled with cactus', poinsettias, ferns and more just glows with lights. Angie and I with her grandson wandered through just in awe. I took this photo with my iPhone.

Afterwards, Angie and I went to see the movie the Descendents and just drooled over George Clooney.

Italian Mama makes me Feel Like Family

Teaching in Spokane is so much fun! The agents are really nice and appreciative.

Angie, the Italian Mama, just makes me feel like family when I go over there! Over the years we have become such great friends! We met because she got certified to teach clockhour real estate classes and now hardly a week goes by that we don't chat. We try to get together every couple months because the mountains separate us! When she schedules me to teach, she invites me to stay at her house. I just become one of the family. Her son and grandson live in the house. I have watched her grandson grow up over the years and he remembers me when I come to stay!

This week I drove to Spokane and taught three classes that she scheduled. The largest, at Windermere, was about Facebook. Those three hours went so fast and we just didn't get to everything. I always learn so much when I teach and I get to meet so many fascinating real estate agents.
On the trip I also got to meet up with several movers and shakers in the Spokane real estate industry. I met the incoming Spokane Association of REALTORS president, Marilyn. I had dinner with Marianne Guenther Bornhoff who is the President Elect.

I chatted with so many people at Inland Professional Title including reps and staff.

It was hard to leave so I stayed on until Saturday morning!

Who would have thought that a happy hour social for the Seattle office of Economic Development would be so fun! About a hundred business professionals crowded the Polar Bar at the classic Artic Hotel. The keyboard filled the room with Christmas and jazzy music by Lance.

Jane and Karen always seem to know the pulse of the city and all the happenings. We shared wine with other girlfriends and made some business connections. I hope to have a real estate class soon in a seattle office, have a connection to a graphic artist, and got a lead on a guy who might be able to help a friend make her home more accessible. I got to know Michelle and Karen better and meet Suzanne.

Then we were off to Belltown to Forte for wine and pizza. Oh my, that pizza, though quite different from Chicago, was about as great as the pizza at Tom Douglas' restaurant in So Lake Union! What a fun night!

Riley meets Santa

Terrah and her friend Dana along with their kids took the Santa Train in North Bend. So, Riley met Santa for the first time. Riley is about 8 months old here. -

Our kids never remember this but, as parents, it is so fun to get these annual pictures and see their reaction.

Look at Terrah's smile as she holds Riley. She is such a loving attentive Mom. Riley is so blessed to be in her arms! I love my daughter-in-law and grandaughter!

Last year I could only imagine what it would be like to have a grandbaby as I sat next to Terrah and Colin only months from the due date! What a gift this Christmas!

Then Again... Diane Keaton's Memoirs

This book, "Then Again" by Diane Keaton, was almost impossible to put down! It was thoughtful, engrossing, and memorable. I bought the hard cover version because I wanted to hold it, to look at the photos many times, and be able to share it with someone when I was done.

Her mother left her thousands of pages of her journals including writings and collages. I can't imagine how incredible that would be to know that much about your mother. My Mom died two decades ago. I have her photos and her art and some of her writing. It was fascinating to see how Diane Keaton would weave the story and memoirs of her mother along with her own stories.

I have boxes of letters that my mom wrote me. She never put dates but I can guess when they were written. Someday I'll go through all of them!

This blog of mine I publish as a book for myself every year. Maybe someday those who come after me will be interested in my life and passions!

I sent the book on to my sister as a Christmas present. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did!

First Thursday 30 Day Art Challenge

This was the day that the public filled the Gallery at TK artist Lofts on the First Thursday Art Walk. Even after spending a couple hours in the gallery the night before, there were paintings that I never saw and even ones that I created that I didn't see the first night. It was fun to have a few friends say that if they were to buy any canvass it would be one of my prints!
I didn't get many photos because of the crowds. The group included Kathleen, Pam, and Cathrine as seen above. But, also Jane and Karen and a few others.

Preview Party for the 30 in 30 Art Show

A small crowd of my friends came to the preview party for the 30 Day Art Challenge. THOUSANDS of 8x10 canvasses covered the walls and the room dividers. It was the most interesting art show I have ever attended. It was exciting to see that my 30 canvasses (many done by my friends) were mixed throughout the room. It was totally overwhelming.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Colin and Terrah's Home

The pastor and the congregation at Bethany Church in Greenlake welcomed Riley in to the fold during the service on Sunday. Colin told the story of how Riley got her name... Riley came from Terrah and June is because both Terrah and Colin were both born on June 2nd in 1983. Riley looked so pretty in her long white dress. Chris is her "Godfather." then we all celebrated at their house!

Sylvia is a play about a New York couple and their relationship... and the one with their dog. What was so interesting is that the dog was played by an actress.. I thought... hmmm maybe that is what the dog is saying when it barks! I enjoyed the play with Steve Garrett at the Seattle Rep!

This year we enjoyed many crisp, cool, dry Autumn days. Today as I walked through the leaves hearing them crunch, I was reminded of my childhood in the Midwest. Leaves of all colors were like a blanket over the entire town. We did art projects every year with leaves. People used to burn the leaves and I can remember the scent. Because it is typically so damp in the Seattle Area, we don't often get these colorful dry days. I just had to go out on a road trip to take in the sights of the changing season. I headed up Hwy 2 to Index. It was a perfect day!

I had about 90 minutes to spend on Capital Hill while I waited for Sandy Garvin "Sam" to get out of surgery. I could just sit in the waiting room entertained by television, my iPad, or answering emails, but I chose to get out in the fresh air and see Volunteer Park. Oh it was such a way to escape from the worry and stress and to revel in the colors on the trees and the plants in the Conservatory.

Often I accompany Jane and Karen on the Seattle First Thursday Art Walk extending from Westlake area to Pioneer Square. Last month, Jane suggested that I enter into the 30DayArtChallenge sponsored byt TK Artists lofts.. and so I did. I had to complete 30 works of art on 8x10 board canvasses in one month. I decided to make it a learning experience so I invited friends to my home to have art days during October. It was such a blast and I sure learned to think... though it is a cliche... outside of the box. It was an interesting exploration into "what is art?" Kathleen O'Callahan and her sister Patricia and cousin Pegeen came the first time with Hillary and Dave, Steve Garrett. Chris Nimick and Boots Swan came the next week. I was in awe of the artists that came, had fun in conversation with friends, and got to play with color.

On Thursday, December 1st during the Seattle First Thursday Art Walk all the 100 or so artists will have their 30 canvasses displayed and for sale for $40 each on that one night only. So, come an join me and check out my canvasses and all the others. I'm guessing it might be one of the biggest art shows in Seattle! TK Artists lofts is located at the intersection of 3rd and Yesler and Prefontaine... just to the east of the Smith Tower building.

Fifth Avenue Theatre with Steve

So I only took a photo of the ceiling this night! The theatre is one of the most beautiful ornate places I have ever seen! We saw the play "Saving Aimee." The singing was absolutely heart throbbing. The costumes were gorgeous. The story a bit confusing. It was written by Kathie Lee Gifford about the founder of the Foursquare church who was a notable woman. Steve Garrett and I moved up to the front of the balcony. We had such a fun time!

Solving the Mystery at Dinner

Who did it? The Million Dollar Mystery Dinner was a benefit for Discovery House which is transitional housing for women and children. Sally Langston is good friends with the couple that started the non profit using their own house. She invited me to the Mystery dinner and Silent Auction. Jerry Fitts came along with me and we laughed the whole time. It was very entertaining. They raised an unbelievable amount in those 3 hours!

Crazy Blue Men

From the time the lights dimmed to the huge lighted balls bouncing around the theatre at the end, I was just captivated by the zany three men all covered in blue!

This was a fantastic play which was basically autobiographical Lorenzo told the story of growing up with the circus. His father was a clown. So along with his very touching story, he also performed many feats that made us laugh. I think this has the power to be very popular ... the more people see it! I was awestruck!

Certified to Teach Boating Education... wow!

Every boater in Washington State must have a boater education card to operate a boat. There are some exceptions and the program is being phased in... but boaters under 40 years old need the card. I took the Instructor Training to get certified to teach the mandatory education. I was one of the few women in the room. In addition, most of those taking the training were in law enforcement.

It's so terrific that I get all the materials to teach the 8 hour course. I hope that I can find locations and people to take it this spring! It will be fun and educational! Do you want to put a class together with me?!

After the wedding I spent about a week in Maui. It was just heavenly swimming in the pool, laying in the sun and walking on the beach. I spent one day driving all around the island to Hana and back. The sun felt so warm. I look forward to another vacation in Hawaii someday!

The wedding took place at the Old Lahaina Oceanfront Estate on Maui. This was the central gathering place, the rehearsal dinner, and the wedding.

Friday Night we all went to Kimo's in Lahaina. We ate and danced and had so much fun!

Saturday was spent at the house with friends and family. It was a gorgeous day. We ate and swam and took photos!

The rehearsal Dinner was Saturday night at the Oceanfront Estate. It was a family prepared event. Kyler, Andrea and I did the centerpieces. The spagetti dinner was prepared by Sam and Sharon and family. Friends set the tables and decorations. It was an absolutely wonderful event.

My sister, Andrea, and her husband of 30 years came to Maui for my son's wedding. It was so special to spend time with them. Since they live in the Boston area, flying to Maui is quite a long journey. It is just heart warming sitting in her presence and looking at her.. her green eyes, blonde curly hair, and her features that are so much from our family. Sergio has been with her since he moved in across the street when she was 16 years old. My daughter, Kyler even looks a bit like Andrea! I made Andrea and Sergio a special little artistic book of these photos for a Christmas present.

Unusual Float Plane lands in Lake Union

This was the most unusual boat or plane I have seen in Seattle. It landed on it's belly. there were some small boats that met it at the south end of the lake. Then it tried more than once to take off... quite a roar. It's a 1950's Grumnan Albatross is owned by a satellite technology company Row44.

Tuesday nights Lake union is filled to the brim with sailboats as the maneuver in place as the Duck Dodge race starts. Today was a beautiful day to share the view with friends. Tonight was the last Duck Dodge for the season. Devi, who has been boating with me for several years and answered questions as she is also an avid sailor. Evening Cruise for the Bachelorette Party

Terrah just glowed as she was surrounded by her girlfriends on a Waterways cruise on Lake Union and Lake Washington for her Bachelorette Party. Amber and Carrie planned the event. So sad Carrie couldn't make it because the baby inside needs a rest! We took fun photos with the Seattle Skyline in the background and had a gourmet dinner as we were served by one handsome hunk...(was that part of the plan?) The Captain was also funny and entertaining. All the girls were in the little black cocktail dresses and Terrah wore a pretty white sexy dress. Sharon came across country just for the day for her daughters party! Weather was absolutely perfect. The gifts ranged from sexy to practical to pretty.

Kites Fill the Sky with Color in Long Beach

People come from around the globe to be in Long Beach for the annual International Kite Festival. I try to get there every couple years. Last year I was in the San Juan Islands for the month, so I made a point of taking off for the weeks festivities this year. The weather cooperated most of the week.

Maureen Pirog came down for one day and we had a delicious dinner at 42nd Street Cafe complete with wine and dessert.

But, the Kites flying to the sound of popular music some in events called "kite ballet" pulls me to the beach. Ray, a world famous kiter from Vancouver CA was there at the waters edge flying three stunt kites.

Steve Garrett was there for about 3 days with a few crossover days with Chris Maxfield. Steve and I... well, mostly Steve, did some projects around the house including installing a new heater in the living room.

Chris and I took a side trip to Astoria one night for dinner at a restaurant I had never been to and saw a movie. We also drove to Ilwaco to the Saturday market.

Salmon-Chanted Evening and Mariners

One of the best views of Puget Sound from the city is at Victor Steinbrueck Park at Pike Place Market. Tom Douglass (famous for his restaurants in the city) holds a Salmon Barbeque once a month in the summer to benefit the Seattle Parks Department. The goal is to bring residents and tourists into this beautiful park. Karen and Jane and I went there and for $15 had the most delicious dinner! I met the locally famous Tom Douglas and got a mug shot with him.

Then we were off to the Sounders vs. Red Sox Mariners game. Jane ... had her shirt proclaiming her love for the Red Sox... while I wore the Seattle t-shirt. The Mariners took the game 5-4. It was such a fun evening!

Little Riley is the center of attention. What a joy to be Grammy to this happy little girl. Colin and Terrah are such loving parents. They are so caring and also just love to play with their little baby. She likes to babble and laugh. The family came over for a BBQ. We had fun going through photo albums with Colin as a kid.
I remember being a mom with small babies. Oh, it was quite a job and I was tired so often, but there is no greater joy than to be blessed as a parent! As Grammy, I get just a little taste and reminder. I can't wait to see them again!

Sarah Jean just carries that new baby around so beautifully! Her baby shower for little Hope was a a friends beautiful home in Kirkland. I met so many of her friends and family. I gave Mikaelyn a cute gift so that she would also have presents to open. I'm so proud of Sarah Jean ... she is such a loving Mom and really takes control of her life! She is the most awesome assistant and makes my business run so smoothly! I am blessed!

Julie Hutton has quite a spirit about her. We have known each other for maybe 25 years but this past year have become great friends! She is planning a kind of benefit concert/event in the future and invited me to come hear this group. The concert "Narayan and Janet" held at Unity Church in Bellevue was filled with all ages. Joined by the music directors of a couple other churches, the place just echoed with their music full of love and peace. I bought three of their CD's!
At the concert I sat near Marilyn Clise who I have known as a real estate agent since I was a rookie. I also ran into Joyce Wampler who I have also known for over 20 years.

Spectacular Days at the Cottage

I just don't get down to Long Beach as often as I used to go. Gull Cottage has been my little family retreat for the past 15 years. There is always some work that has to be done to keep it up. This week I got out the mower and weed eater.

I have two favorite restaurants on the peninsula. Dinner at the Depot by myself was a nice break after a day of working on the house and yard. I had the best scallops!

At 42nd St Cafe I had dinner with Cheri and Charlie Diehl. They are great friends, but also they are running a great real estate company, Discovery Coast Real Estate! Blaine, owner, served us like Royalty and it was great chatting with Leslie Brophy from Pacific RE.

It was fun to drive around for a little while taking photos of the town of Long Beach, the beach and the Port of Ilwaco. I hope to get down there soon! Maybe you will come join me!

Sounders Win...

Jane and Karen with season tickets are avid Seattle Sounders game fans... I was fortunate to go with them to this exciting game with some fantastic scoring.

We ate Lunch prior to the game at Fado, an Irish restaurant/pub on First Ave and then walked over to the game. On the way by Occidental park we got a view of the wrapped trees. The knitted scarfs wrap the tree trunks and light poles with color!

A party at the home of Attorney Ruth Moen is bound to have an interesting eclectic crowd, lots of music and the most colorful spectacular art. This party to celebrate Mardi Gras in July was a fundraiser for Rotary. I met Ruth through my other friends Elizabeth and Sam also past members of Rotary.

Ruth's art lines her walls. Her furniture is art. Her costume is art. I am inspired every time I meet her to make sure that I live my life every day as authentic as I can be and to express myself with the talents that I was given.

Model Exhibit for Seattle Architecture Foundation

The annual model exhibit for Seattle Architecture Foundation is alwasy so interesting. I've only seen architecture models on tv before I got involved with SAF. This year it was held at pacific in a storefront.
What is really sad is that Sydney fell at the exhibit and broke her leg. We had a volunteer gathering and all posed for the photo for her. We had a trivia contest and the team I was on won the prizes.. I helped by looking up an answer on my iphone... but otherwise I was paired with brains!

The weather was absolutely perfect which as we were to find out months later... was one of the few remarkable days with sun during the entire month. With a front row seat we could see the barge towed into the middle of the lake. All the boats, more than probably ever, were down at the south end. Gas Works park was totally packed and I later found out the crowd included Colin, Terrah and Baby Riley (wearing headphones to protect her ears!) It was just a perfect day topped off with a spectacular fireworks show!

Stacking Rocks

There is something so simple about stacked rocks along a river. Probably came from a past Native American tradition and it is considered almost spiritual. Elizabeth and Kees live along the Raging River in Preston in one of the most beautiful homes and gardens.

I spent the afternoon with Elizabeth and her "son's" girlfriend, Carrie, who is like a daughter to her. We stacked rocks and then had the most flavorful dinner of Copper River Salmon.

Kees showed me the chickens and rooster and his latest project out by the shed. He also gave me one of his paintings. What a fabulous evening!

Sharon Chandler invited Linda Landin and I over for an elegant dinner in May. She served the most delicious crab cakes. The rose red rhododendron's were in full bloom out the window. This dinner brought the three of us together!

Phyllis played a part in each of our lives. I was not nearly as close as they were to her but I feel like I now knew her so much better! She was killed along with Bob Riggle by the Somali Pirates as crew on another sailboat heading from India to the Mediterranean. Sharon made the most beautiful and detailed photo albums.

The first weekend of April I was fortunate to arrange for Allen and Wendy to take Phyllis' family out into Puget Sound and send her ashes out floating on cherry blossoms and rose petals. Sharon made an album about that day. I caught photos of everyone on board. Though we are all smiling... of course, we had great memories of Phyllis... but our eyes are all a bit bloodshot!

Wearable costumes made of buttons, twigs, sequins, crochet, fake fur, and other found pieces fill the galleries at The Seattle Art Museum. "Meet Me at the Center of the Earth" is the title of the exhibit by Nick Cave that is quite unusual. The costumes in many cases make noise when worn so they are also called "soundsuits." This was a night to celebrate with people of all ages in costume in parade down First Avenue culminating with performance of dancers wearing furry colorful costumes.
Jane, Karen, Nancy, Carol, and Janes daughter and I all had dinner at the Taste restaurant in the museum. I was just a fun evening!

There is always work that has to be done on the boat. I found a guy to replace the carpet with a wood floor in the salon. While we were working on it today, an old fishing boat came into the dock being towed. It took several tries coming into the marina and came within inches of my boat. May not seem like a big deal, but when you find out that it sunk when it hit an iceberg in Alaska (that's the story, I hear) and repairs were just done... then you have to be really careful around it.

Riley came over to visit with her parents, Colin and Terrah. She is now about 6 weeks old and as cute as ever! The sun came out which has been a rare sight in Seattle for the past 6 months. We had brunch in the sunroom with Kyler. Sam Garvin and Maureen Pirog came to visit also.

Oh it was so great to hold Riley. In our lives, we seldom get the chance to hold a newborn baby in our arms. That is only reserved for parents and grandparents... and the rare time a friend lets you hold one. Those babies grow quickly, so every chance I can hold that little bundle of love ... I take it!

Colin and Terrah are loving, caring parents. It is interesting watching my son adoring his little girl. It is special to see the soft father side of him.

A Trip to the Islands to Teach Classes

The San Juan Islands are like the jewels of Puget Sound. There are supposedly over 100 islands... but the ferry only travels to a few. What I really appreciate about my job is the ability to teach real estate classes almost anywhere in the state. I get to see different communities, meet agents and learn how they conduct business, and i get to learn about other real estate markets.

The real estate agents there are so appreciative when I make the trip. I spent one day on Orcas Island. That night I spent at Outlook Inn and my room had a view. I taught a smaller class in a nice view room overlooking the water. I had to keep reminding myself that there are a number of agents in front of me and not get mesmerized by the view. At one point I saw something in the water out of the corner of my eye and I had to stop myself from running over to the window.

The next day I had a class in Friday Harbor. I stayed at the guest house of an agent who generously offered when she saw my posting on Facebook that I was coming to teach. In addition, the agents got the word out and a group of us went out to a couple places for happy hour and dinner overlooking the marina. That class was much larger held in the fire station.

I hope that I made a good enough impression that I get invited to come teach again!

The signs for the Garden Art Fair pulled me so I stopped in Anacortes early on Saturday morning as I headed home. The old cliche... "It's a small world" rang true when I ran into Bob Brodie and his two grandkids. It was a fun little reunion.

The lights, noises, music blaring, scented air, ringing in casinos, bigger than life outside movie screens, wedding chapels, Elvis impersonators, dancing waters... and all the people... Yes... Las Vegas! It was my first trip.

Susan Shreck invited me to stay with her in her time share condo just off the strip. She raised her kids there and worked with her ex husband in their medical practice. I got to see Vegas from the eyes of a tourist and also from a resident. I met Susan's family including her new grandaughter. We celebrated Easter with everyone in the time share condo and added time by the pool to the delicious brunch!

I have seen pics of Vegas and it has been the backdrop of many television shows... but nothing compares to being there. Strolling down the walkway along the Venetian Canals, having lunch in the Eiffel Tower, and looking up at the skyline of New York City made it feel like an adult Disneyland.

There is a Statue of Liberty, a monorail and a Typewriter Eraser sculpture by Oldenburg.. and some good looking ducks... just like we have in Seattle. Hmmm.. did I feel at home?

I put money in slot machines.

I was in awe at LaReve, the Cirque de Soleil show.

I laughed watching Rita Rudner play the audience.

I was captivated by the Phantom of the Opera.

It was a magical trip!

Phyllis Macay had a smile that would light up a room. She had a fun energy and a good outlook on life. I appreciated her creative talents and saw them most in her costumes and decorations at the Seattle Singles yacht Club for most of the last decade. She left years ago to sail around the world with Bob Riggle, who I also knew at the club. His methodical approach to things and her carefree whimsical attitude made for quite a mix!

I am a volunteer tour guide for the Seattle Architecture Foundation leading walking tours in the city. The "Greatest Hits" tour includes some of the most notable buildings in the city. On this day I had a small group and we had so much fun on the walking tour! Here we are on the blue bridge in Seattle City Hall as we enjoy the view of the city, the Smith Tower, the Port of Seattle and Puget Sound. After this we went up to Mayor McGinn's office to see his reception area and balcony!

Said Goodbye to my Mazda... Hello to Honda

There is a life for every product. Though I loved my little blue Mazda Protege, the repairs to the engine were more than the value of the car. With about 150,000 miles since I bought it new in 2003 it was hard to say goodbye. So after shopping for a week enduring those just pathetic car salespeople, I found a 2004 Honda Civic while browsing on my iPad at a Honda dealership giving me the run around... I found this one at the BMW dealer in Bellevue... got up and headed there! It had less than 50,000 miles and was in great condition. Though I want to be conservative and not spend lots of money on a vehicle, I do dream of owning another one or two. I drive so much... but a girl can dream. When I am on the road, I look around at all the cars and wonder what I would buy if I could have anything. ... A Pruis and a Honda CRV.... so far they are in the lead. It could be years.. hmmm.

Storm water flooding

The water that comes down the ravine ends up in the backyard. A development up the hill built in 1966 was repaved in 1999 and storm drains were installed. Now over a mile and half of storm drains just dump storm water into the ravine. The overflow and erosion comes down like a waterfall during heavy rains. For some unknown reason, my neighbors, who have done nothing to mitigate for the water, continue to blame me for the overflow. The water crosses one neighbors yard in the back and continues downhill... across my yard.... then flows across the neighbor to the south and into the drain that takes it into the storm drains in the street. Many years ago, the people that used to live here installed piping to try to catch the water and take it to the drain to the south of my neighbors. but, when the waterfall comes, it is overwhelming. I have spent thousands of dollars replacing the piping, putting in drain cleanouts, and cleaning up the stream. My neighbors spend their time complaining. Such a shame.

Real Estate BarCamp at Seattle Center March 3rd

With over 650 participants, this years Real Estate BarCamp was probably one of the largest and most successful in the country. We had enough sponsors to not only pay the costs, but also to be able to donate thousands of dollars to a local charity for homelessness. Eagles Soar above Skagit River

Bald eagles line the trees along the Skagit River in January each year. Volunteers man stations alone the river to give visitors information about where eagles have been spotted, have scopes set up to see eagles close up, and provide pamphlets and maps. The two hour drive was just so beautiful on the winding Hwy 530. I took many photos of barns in red, grey and powder blue. When I reached Hwy 20 and the Rockport Eagle Visitor Center I was ready to spot those brilliant white bald bald headed eagles. But there were none to be found there. I drove about 20 miles north and in the next three hours spotted over a dozen eagles along the river. I was able to get a few great shots of them. After awhile it gets easier to recognize their familiar shape as they perch in trees standing watch over the river looking for dinner.I went by myself and loved breathing the fresh cool air and watching over the river hoping for another glimpse on my own time. Hopefully, if I go next year I'll have a better camera with a more powerful lens.

It is overwhelming how many products have been created since I was pregnant! Back then there was one or maybe two brands of pacifiers and strollers. Today aisles of the stores are lined with both. I went shopping with Kyler for the shower that Terrah's Mom is giving her next week. She and Colin didn't really have a very long list when they registered. The crib, changing table dresser and cradle are all ready. Kyler wrapped all our gifts and they fill the trunk of her car!

You can't hear the tune, but years ago the ads ran the slogan over and over and it plays in my head each January when it is boat show time! As a boat owner and enthusiast, I have to go once or twice during the ten day run. I went the first day of the show which is always fun because there is lots of energy because the exhibitors aren't exhausted yet. This year I had time to climb through all the big yachts on display and cruise through the entire show rather quickly as I was alone. There is something to be said for having the booths in the same location every year, but there are times I wonder how interesting it would be to mix it up one year. I think I'd visit booths I might never normally see. It is getting too predictable. This year I didn't buy anything or look for anything specific. I didn't notice any new and unusual gadget or toy.

Tacoma Art and Glass

I really don't have a good excuse for waiting for years to go to see art in Tacoma. I've seen Chihuly glass exhibits in Wisconsin and Arizona in addition to around the Northwest. I've been to the Seattle Art Museum many times. But, I have always wanted to walk on the bridge of glass and see a hot shop at the Museum of Glass and see the Tacoma Art Museum. Today, I was off to check them out on my own toting my camera with me. Both museums are within a block of each other and were not very large.

The Museum of Glass had several exhibits but they did not allow photographs. For many months children were asked to draw pictures and then the glass blowers would choose a drawing and make it in glass. That was actually an amazing exhibit. I also loved the "Landscape" ... all clear glass .... a path surrounded by trees and leaves mostly all suspended from the ceiling like curtains. With the clear glass and lighting it was like looking at a forest all covered in frost.

The Tacoma Art Museum had a small impressionism exhibit. I learned that the term was coined from one of Monet's paintings with that word in the name in 1874. One painting that caught my eye.. was "Natalie in a blue Skirt" by William Glackers painted in 1914.

Though I am not really artistic, I do like to do crafty things and I love color. Going to art museums and galleries always inspires me.

Learning... Practicing... Yoga

In October 2010 I was given a coupon by Hillary for a yoga place in my neighborhood, BalaYoga. "Try this," she said. "It will really help strengthen your back and you will work on balance and stretching." So.. a bit nervous and apprehensive, I walked into the studio, met one of the owners and asked if they would double the coupon... (make it for twice the number of days at the reduced rate... heck.. Why not... maybe I won't even go again... ) He agreed. With my little halter and pants off the sale rack at Fred Meyer and an inexpensive yoga mat I entered the studio which was at 90 degrees. I think back on that first week and I must have really looked funny. I knew nothing about yoga, could barely do a single pose, and I sweat like a basketball player dribbling down the court during the last few seconds of the game.

I decided to try to see if I could continue for 30 days on a regular basis. They I made it 60 days. Now I am past the 70 day mark (10 weeks) and I have gone to an average of a class every other day... That is over 35 classes!

It is difficult. Not so much the yoga poses as they get easier and then more challenging. No... what is really hard is getting out of the house and to the studio. I fight all those voices. I seem to have quite an audience in my head and it never seems to be cheering me on! Those voices know every excuse imaginable to NOT go to class. And they work the angle for every one. But, I stand up and push forward. I figure if I get in the car... if I drive toward the studio... if I park... If I walk in.... well ... then I am committed.

I went to classes to help my back. It has been about 7 years since I had surgery on a ruptured disc. But, for the past year my right side aches and is weak. I went to the surgeon and then to physical therapy. I did every exercise and paid all those bills... But, after one week of yoga the pain was almost completely gone! The other fantastic benefit is that I am much trimmer and have lost weight. I don't picture myself as a skinny model... I think I'll always have wings that won't make me fly and a waist that is hard to find... but I feel must more in shape and my clothes fit better!

Now, I have to have a meeting with the voices. I am trying to think of what my next goal should be. I hit the 10 week mark... Maybe I'll go for 3 months next. Small goals that are attainable make me feel like I am accomplishing something.

I found three friends (Hillary, Maureen, and Caroline) to join me at the annual Sound of Music Sing Along at the 5th Avenue Theatre on the first day of the new year. I went a couple years ago with another friend and had a ball!
When we entered the theatre we were given an small bag with some props. People all around were dressed in costume... the Von Trapp family, Maria, nuns, Capt Von Trapp, brown paper packages tied in string, girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes... etc. Caroline had an apron.. was Maria?.... but when she got up on stage she was asked who she was and she said, I am Rachel Ray, I am looking for the Food Network? I had a blast, thank you so much for inviting me. What a way to start the new year!!"Everyone in the audience laughed... Some she should do a stand up comedy act!
We all had so much fun and plan to go back next year.. hmmm... what costumes???

This was the first Christmas that our little family didn't celebrate together on the actual holiday. So, I invited Kyler to go to Semiahmoo Resort near Blaine for the weekend. The spa, hot tub, festive decorations, movie White Christmas, buffet dinner and the view! It is located on a spit jutting out into Puget Sound. Spectacular!

We celebrated Christmas, had the annual Beef fondue dinner and Crab legs, and exchanged gifts a week early. In the middle of dinner the lighted Christmas ships cruised by and we could hear the music. It was very special and fun.

Walking Architectural Tour in Downtown Seattle

Look up! We just don't look up in our city... busy with finding parking, looking for addresses, weaving through a bustling crowd or ducking under an eave from the rain. Volunteering as a tour guide for the Seattle Architectural Foundation has really added to my life. I have taken the time to learn about our city and in turn shared that information with people from as far away as France and Switzerland to people that live in buildings on the tour. This year I had the "Greatest Hits" tour approved by the Real Estate Department of Licensing as a 3 clockhour course for agents. In December, there was quite a crowd of real estate agents on the tour. Here we are on the James Carpenter Bridge, a functional piece of art in the Seattle City Hall.

Thanksgiving was a special holiday for our little family as it was the first one with Colin and his Fiance, Terrah! Along with them, Kyler, and I prepared a fabulous Thanksgiving Feast!

While taking photos after dinner on the couch to use for my Christmas card, the little baby girl was trying to get some attention by kicking so that all would focus on her! It was so adorable!

Elizabeth has a knack for entertaining.. making a simple dinner for a group! Sam was heading into the hospital for an intense chemo treatment for two weeks so we enjoyed a sweet dinner together with her son, Jon, who had just arrived in town and Kyler and Kees.
